Visit Madinah

Your guide to Madinah’s sacred and historic sites.

Jannat al-Baqi, also known as Baqiʿ al-Gharqad, is the historic cemetery of Madinah, just outside the old city area near Masjid an-Nabawi. Its name comes from the many gharqad trees that once grew there. Many of the Prophet’s family members, wives, children and a large number of Sahabah are buried in this sacred place.

It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said about this cemetery:

“Everyone who is buried in this, our cemetery of Baqiʿ al-Gharqad, we will intercede for him on the Day of Resurrection or bear witness for him.”

The Prophet ﷺ would go to Baqiʿ, stand there and make duʿa, saying:

“Peace be upon you, O dwelling of believing people… O Allah, pardon the people of Baqiʿ al-Gharqad.”

Visiting Jannat al-Baqi reminds the heart of the honour of those buried there and of our own journey to the Hereafter, as we send salām and duʿā for the people of this blessed cemetery.
