It is called Masjid al-Ijābah, because the Prophet ﷺ supplicated to Allah in it and asked for three things; Allah answered two of those supplications and withheld the third.
It is also called Masjid Banī Muʿāwiyah, because it is located in the quarter of Banī Muʿāwiyah from among the Anṣār.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Prayer and Supplication in the Mosque
It is established that the Prophet ﷺ prayed in Masjid al-Ijābah and made supplication there, as related by Muslim from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came one day from al-ʿĀliyah. When he passed by the mosque of Banī Muʿāwiyah, he entered it and prayed two rakʿahs there, and we prayed along with him. He then supplicated to his Lord for a long time, after which he turned to us and said:
“I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two of them and withheld one.
I asked my Lord that He not destroy my community by famine, and He granted it to me.
I asked Him that He not destroy my community by drowning, and He granted it to me.
And I asked Him that He not make their suffering among themselves, but He withheld that from me.”
