Visit Madinah

Your guide to Madinah’s sacred and historic sites.

The mosque stands on a small black hill known as Jabal Dhubāb and Jabal al-Rāyah, at the beginning of Ṭarīq al-ʿUyūn (the road to the springs), on the left side of the road for one who is going out along it.

The Prophet’s Tent ﷺ on Jabal Dhubāb and the Appearance of a Miracle

At the beginning of the trench digging, near Masjid al-Mustarāḥ, in the area of Banī Ḥārithah, the line of the trench extended beside Jabal Dhubāb until it reached what is now Jabal Salʿ opposite the mosques of al-Fatḥ. At that time the Prophet ﷺ set up his tent on Jabal Dhubāb to supervise the digging of the trench.

There, a miracle took place concerning the great rock that appeared in the northern side of Jabal Dhubāb. After the Companions were unable to break it, the Prophet ﷺ struck it with a pick-axe; sparks flew from it and it illuminated what lay between the twin lava plains of Madinah. In that flashing he was shown the palaces of Madāʾin, Kisrā, the palaces of the Romans and Ṣanʿāʾ, and Jibrīl (peace be upon him) informed him that his community would be victorious over them.
