There were, in that area, two forts belonging to some Jews. They were called al-Shaykhān, and due to the eminence of these two forts the mosque in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed when he was going out to (the battle of) Uḥud was named after them.

Main events that happened at Masjid al-Shaykhayn

• Nabi ﷺ’s camp before Uḥud
  • The Prophet ﷺ encamped at Mawdiʿ al-Shaykhayn on the way to the battle of Uḥud and stayed there from Friday night till Saturday morning.
• Prayers before moving to Uḥud
  • He ﷺ prayed in the masjid by al-Badā’iʿ at al-Shaykhayn (Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib and ʿIshā’ on Friday, then Fajr on Saturday) before marching towards Uḥud.
• Consultation (shūrā) before the battle
  • At this site he ﷺ held a council with the Companions regarding whether to remain in Madinah or go out to face the enemy, accepting some opinions and leaving others.
• Meal in the masjid & duʿā’ for martyrdom
  • Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها brought roasted meat and nabīdh; the Prophet ﷺ ate and drank, then ʿAbdullāh ibn Jahsh drank the remainder and expressed his wish for martyrdom. The Prophet ﷺ made duʿā’ for him, and he was martyred at Uḥud.
• Review of horses and troops
  • The Prophet ﷺ reviewed and paraded his horses and fighters at al-Shaykhayn before heading to the battlefield.
• Revelation about the hypocrites (4:88)
  • When some people with the army turned back and others debated whether to fight alongside them, the verse فَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِئَتَيْنِ …
    was revealed concerning them at this stage of the march.
• Screening of under-age Companions
  • At al-Shaykhayn the Prophet ﷺ inspected the young boys who wanted to join the battle and sent back those who were too young, including:
    • ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar
    • Usāmah ibn Zayd
    • Zayd ibn Thābit
    • al-Barā’ ibn ʿĀzib
    • Asīd (or Usayd) ibn Ẓuḥayr
    • ʿUrābah ibn Aws
    • Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (who later narrated: “I was among those turned back from al-Shaykhayn on the day of Uḥud.”)
